Battling in the era of political war and bloodshed, Dynasty Warriors: Origins takes us to the beginning of the legendary story of the Three Kingdoms. You face all kinds of interesting foes that will get harder to defeat as the game progresses. One of the first enemies you’ll have to defeat is Zhang Jiao, Leader of the Yellow Turbans. He can be very hard to defeat due to his unpredictable attacks. Here’s a guide to beating Zhang Jiao in the game without dying too many times.
How To Defeat Zhang Jiao

Defeating Zhang Jiao is easier with weapons like Sword and Gauntlet. You can interchange weapons mid-battle. Zhang Jiao can call huge rocks from the sky and throw them at you.
This Yellow Turbans Boss Fight in Dynasty Warriors: Origins is divided into two phases.
- First Phase: Battle between you and Zhang Jiao.
- Second Phase: War between your group and the Yellow Turbans
Zhang Jiao Boss Fight: The First Phase
Once you step foot in the large Wasteland, the First Phase of the fight with Zhang Jiao will be triggered. In this phase, Zhang Jiao will try to kill you by bringing down large rocks from the sky. He can also attack you with boulders from the sides. Being very mobile during the fight can easily evade these rock attacks. The farther you stand from him, the more powerful his attacks get.
He’s good at close-range attacks too and has various combos that he will use to damage your health quickly. Block Jiao’s attacks whenever possible. Once Zhang Jiao starts glowing white, it means he is preparing for his AOE Attack. When you see him glowing this way, go back further and dodge or block the upcoming attacks.

If Zhang Jiao glows with a red aura, it means he is preparing for an unavoidable attack. You can cancel out his other attacks by blocking him midway, but these red aura attacks cannot be stopped. Since these can’t be stopped, it’s better for you to just move to a safe distance and protect yourself from the multiple giant rocks he will throw at you.
Using weapons like a sword or gauntlet will allow you to quickly attack Zhang Jiao before he prepares for his next attack. Be heavy on the offense and try to hit him as many times as possible. While bringing down Zhang Jiao’s health is essential, keep an eye on your health too. There won’t be many chances to heal yourself in these two phases. Even if you do heal, you’ll have to do it strategically since you can only heal around 4 times during this whole boss fight.
You can find some food jars near the entrance of the wasteland. Once you are low on health, run towards these jars and have some meat buns to restore your energy. Use this only when necessary as the healing options are limited.
Zhang Jiao Boss Fight: The Second Phase

Once you bring down Zhang Jiao’s health to a certain level, the fight will shift from a 1v1 to an all-out war. You will also unlock the well-known ability from the older Dynasty Warrior games, known as War God Rage or Musou Rage. This will allow you to have a 15-second buff where all of your attacks will have double the power and speed. You will also have a longer range without consuming Bravery.
Besides the Yellow Turbans, your army will show up too and fight alongside you. Use this time to heal yourself or come up with a strategy. Even though many soldiers are around you, Zhang Jiao can still call upon rocks and tornadoes to push you around, using his Thunderous Tempest ability. Keep bringing down as many soldiers as you can using your sword, gauntlet, or any other weapon like the Spear.
Zhang Jiao can also change the weather and make it rain. When he does this, try to keep an eye on your feet. If you see a circular mark around you, it means he is planning to attack you. Try to evade whatever attacks he does on you once the ring starts to blink. The second phase is much harder than the first one, since here you’ll have to defeat around 300+ soldiers in a short time.
Since you’ll unlock War God Rage/Musou Rage by then, try to use it at the right time to kill as many soldiers as you can. Get the Leaders and Generals first and then attack the normal soldiers. Zhang Jiao’s overall attacks won’t change much, so just use your Phase 1 strategy to quickly bring down his health once you see an opening. Use your Musou Rage on him wherever you can. Killing him will complete the first part of the story, after which you will unlock the next chapter.
And with that, you have successfully brought down one of the tougher enemies in the game. But all this is just prep work for the most difficult fight that the game throws at you, and if you want to be better prepared to handle that, bookmark our guide on how to defeat Lu Bu.
