Nian Suichang follows a complex set of quest line progression in Wuchang. It can be difficult to track down the paths and the NPC details, and the primary objective for each quest. There are also ways one could break the quest permanently by making a tiny mistake. Here, we have created an easy-to-understand, simple guide that points out all the Nian Suichang Locations and Questline (Bone Whistle Reward).
First Nian Suichang Location | Narrow Stretch
You will find Nian Suichang at Narrow Stretch, it is a path located between Temple and Sanctum. Nian is a distinct-looking NPC with a straw hat and a blue robe. You will find him by the tree next to the stairs leading to the Worship’s Rise on the left. Talk to Nian and run out of dialogue, and at the end, choose Agree to help. We must help him gather elixirs for his brother. This rewards you with Bone Whistle and Well Met.
Note: If you decide not to agree to help Nian Suichang, then you will see him again at Reverent Temple.
Second Nian Suichang Location | Shu Sanctum Shrine
This short meeting will take place when you find Nian Suichang again, but this time at the Shu Sanctum Shrine. At the end of the conversation with Nian, he will just remind you of the Bone Whistle in your possession. Use the Bone Whistle against Feathered Priest Lu Bingzhang’s boss fight at the top of Shu Sanctum.
After you have defeated the boss, speak to Nian Suichang and hand over the Mercurial Blood obtained by defeating the Bingzhang boss. In exchange, Nian Suichang will hand over Soft Rush x3. He will tell you that he will be off to Reverent Temple.

Third Nian Suichang Location | Reverent Temple
Head over to the Reverent Temple Shrine, get to the second floor of the temple to encounter Nian with his sick brother, Qiao Lin. He will talk about the success of using Mercurial blood to help his sick brother. Run out of dialogue with Nian to get Kong Wine x3.
Now, eliminate Honglan in the Tang Emperor’s Palace, and you will gain the Reverent Temple Key. With the key in your possession, talk to Nian Suichang, found at the bottom of the stairs of Reverent Temple, left of the locked door. Use the Reverend Temple Key to open the door, and then Nian Suichang will give you Spicy Soup x5.
Fourth Nian Suichang Location | Hillswatch
You will encounter Nian Suichang at Hillswatch. He will talk about losing his pack. Our objective is to recover the Tattered Pack and hand it to Nian to progress the quest.
Tattered Pack Location: You will find the Tattered Pack on your way to the Snowy Passage Shrine in Hillswatch, specifically located on the side of the road.
With the Tattered Pack in our possession, head back to Nian and hand him the pack. Here, Nian will give you the Sorry emoticon or pose.
Breaking Nian’s Quest: If you decide to keep the Tattered Pack instead of handing it over to Nian, then you will break Nian’s questline forever. Another way to break the quest is to skip Chapter 2 and run straight into Chapter 3.
Fifth Nian Suichang Location | Cloudspire Outskirts
Nian will also join you against General of the North Ai Nengqi. Before the boss gate found in Cloudspire Outskirts, you will encounter Nian again. Equip the Bone Whistle and summon him in the boss arena. Defeat the boss, and Nian will give you Kong Wine x3.
Sixth Nian Suichang Location | Refugee Camp
Once you are in Chapter 3, make your way to the Refugee Camp. Here you will find Nian Suichang next to Wu Gang. After exhausting all the dialogue with Nian, the game will reward you with Emerald Lotus Seed x3.
Defeat the boss, The Bo Sorcerer, in Avian Marsh. After slaying the boss, teleport to the Refugee Camp, and you will find Nian at the shortcut. Exhaust all the dialogue until he hands over Soft Rush Flowers x3 and asks you to summon while facing the main boss of the area.
Seventh Nian Suichang Location | Refugee Camp
Next time, you will see Nian at the bridge above the arena for some unique dialogue exchange as he hands over Fire Pots x3.
Eight Nian Suichang Location | Refugee Camp
Continue your journey through Mt. Zhenwu until you come across Altar Gate Shrine. Use your Bone Whistle to summon Nian to face the boss at this arena. To make it more crowded, Huang Jian’e will also appear if you have completed her questline. After defeating the boss, speak to Nian at the entrance of the cave to Ferryman’s Overlook. After speaking to him, you will obtain 3x Special Pills.
Ninth Nian Suichang Location | Shu Sanctum
Teleport to Shu Sanctum and get to the top of the place. Once you make it to the top, you will see Nian sitting at the edge of the cliff. Here, you will find a Key item named Sword of Exorcism, next to the corpse Nian is holding. Talk to Nian, end all the dialogue to get the key item Sword of Exorcism.
Now head back to the shrine, get inside the dream, and refresh the world status. Make your way back to Nian; his body will disappear, and you will receive the Zhanlu Sword, Champion Armor Set, and Sword of Judgement key item.
